The Future of Decision Making
Let's face it. We're simply not getting the adoption we need with analytic applications. It really doesn't matter which survey you choose, BI is in the hands of less than 10% of the organisation. What's more shocking is that as much as 40% of major decisions are being made without reference to the very systems that were built for making those decisions source: Accenture, Competing Through Analytics)
Social Business Meets Analytics
It's certainly not all bad news. Analytic applications are making a difference. They are adding value by informing and by casting the light of hard data into dark and complex decisions. The issue is not really with Business Intelligence as such. In fact the way we work is changing and changing dramatically and Business Intelligence hasn't kept up. Business tools referred to as Social Business platforms, whilst new, are driving much of this change. The good news? Social business platforms can integrate with Business Intelligence in what Gartner call Collaborative Decision Making platforms. The better news? IBM are at the forefront with the integration of Connections and Cognos BI.
Social Business? Isn't that an Oxymoron?
Think about this for a moment. A manager. Any manager, essentially does three things.
1. Plans
2. Monitors
3. Get thing's done
Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting Tools support the first management activity and Business Intelligence the second. But in terms of getting things done there is nothing. Particularly if you consider that managers, by definition, get things done through others. Getting things done through others requires social interaction in the form of conversations, telephone calls, emails. These social interactions are less about social and everything about business execution.
