In order to make answers more relevant and content more useful it is vital to be able to describe how you see the world, the companies that are important to you and the way you map the real world into meaningful categories of entities for your business.
At Artesian we call the structure of how a company organises the world it’s “taxonomy”, this is a term stolen from Biology but essentially means “a system of classification”. Things like companies, territories and products are often included in our taxonomies.
The Artesian system allows clients to create “taxonomies” for the whole company, a single department, or even an individual; the taxonomy is central to ensuring that the information you get out is both accurate and relevant.

Tell us how you see the world – Everyone has a different perspective on business, often there are even many different perspectives within the same business. Basic company information, like who are prospects, customers, competitors, suppliers etc. can be established within the system and used to refine and filter results. Even more complex relationships may also be modelled, for example who are the competitors of your prospects or who are ex-customers etc. This information may be administered within the surveillance system itself or imported from CRM or ERP systems like Microsoft Dynamics or Salesforce.com etc.

No two organisations are the same – Much as software providers would like to think, no two companies are the same. Even in our simple example we see that there are potentially 4 different aspects of the question that are specific to the person asking, i.e. “prospects”, “territory”, “Industry” and “Company Size”. The values of these things will vary depending on who is asking the question. At Artesian we call these things “dimensions”, most implementations would include dimensions such as “companies”, “territories”, “organisation”, “products” etc. and each may contain a rich diversity of structural data in order to accurately reflect how that company chooses to organise things.

What's involved? – We have designed the Artesian surveillance product to operate in an evolutionary manner; this means that clients can start simple and increase their level of sophistication over time. Initially short focused pilot projects can be run that encapsulate the needs of a single department or team, this ensures that the taxonomies and data integration requirements are small and costs are minimised. Having proved value in one place you simply add to the taxonomy incrementally or add more and more depth to incorporate different departments, areas of the business or different dimensions etc. The duration of such projects vary according to their individual needs, at Artesian we have a very capable and committed consulting group that have a great pedigree in data integration and system implementation work who are on-tap to help get you up and running with the minimum amount of delay.
