Having sorted out the taxonomy that is relevant to the business and a set of places where we can acquire trusted
information we now turn our attention to what it is we want to look for.

In the Artesian solution we refer to these things as “topics”, since that’s what they are, i.e. “topics of interest”,
these topics can be sensibly organised and used in a variety of flexible and powerful ways that make the process of
focusing your surveillance information easy and quick.

We are looking at one specific question in this tour and that is ”deals won or lost”, the other parts of
that sentence are simply ways in which we want to limit or filter the results, i.e. in this example we’re
only interested in deals won or lost by our top 500 prospects, clearly this information gives us some
indication of how well our prospects are doing in their business, of course, it would be quite reasonable
to ask this same question of our top 500 customers or our biggest competitors etc. We call a question like
this a “topic” because when you capture it this way that’s what it becomes, i.e. a point of topical interest
to the business.
In the Artesian surveillance solution you only need to capture your topics once, they are immediately
available to be used by any authorised user of the system and can be “limited” by any part of your taxonomy,
we call them “scope rules”, they give you a hugely powerful way of simply and easily defining complex business
oriented topics to find.
